Please encourage your child to keep up with their independent reading.  This is very important to their development of language, both written and spoken.  Even though AR is not a requirement they should still be reading daily!

FYI - I don't mind if the students read outside their ZPD as long as most of their books are NOT below their ZPD.  It is all right if they read a book below their level every now and then.  I like picture books too!
