Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome you and your child to my class and provide you with information about your child’s year in Kindergarten.  Please read through this packet and keep it all year to use as a reference.  Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns as the year progresses.  Parents, with your cooperation and positive encouragement, I know we will have a very successful learning year in kindergarten!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Wendy Connelly

Attendance:

A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, the parent, and the school.  Your child’s progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation.  Regular attendance without tardiness is the key.

Arrivals and Departures:

When your child arrives at school they should line up on our blue line on the playground side of the school. (Cherry Street) No playing on the equipment before school! There is not a supervisor out there until 7:55 a.m. so please drop off accordingly.  Children eating breakfast should go right into the school.  They do not line up. Please remind them in the morning before they leave home.

If your child is going to be picked up after school they will be dismissed from Mrs. Smith’s outside door on High Street.  Mrs. Knox will be dismissing them and she will dismiss each student one at a time when she identifies who will be picking them up.  Please be patient with her we do not want to lose any students!

Breakfast/Milk/Lunch Money

Please send money in an envelope marked “Meal/Milk Money” with your child’s name and KC.  Please put it in the zipper pencil case in your child’s folder.   Make checks payable to Morrison Community Unit District #6 or MCUD #6.

Kindergarten Newsletter

A newsletter will come home at the end of every week.  Please make sure you  READ it so you are aware of the things that we are doing in class.  I might write on the newsletter for your child to bring or wear something to school on a certain day.  This newsletter is a great way for me to keep you informed as to what is going on in the classroom.

School Notes

Any note sent to the teacher or the school without the date can be very confusing at times.  Please date all notes sent to school and help make this a standard procedure for the entire SCHOOL YEAR!  Thanks for your cooperation. I will answer your notes as soon as possible.  I may not reply to your note the same day you send it in, so please send any note that needs an answer a day or two in advance.

Daily Snacks & Birthday Celebrations

Each child will be assigned a day to bring in snacks for the class. (starting in September) Check the weekly newsletter to see when it is your child’s turn to bring in snacks!    Please try to send NUTRITIOUS snacks such as apple slices, jello jigglers, crackers, popcorn, pretzels, etc.    ** Snacks must be in individual serving sizes.  ** (Example: Please put pretzels in baggies) This way your child will be able to pass them out.

You will be assigned on the snack schedule to send in treats on your child’s birthday, unless you indicate otherwise. ** No cupcakes, please. **

If you are giving a party for your child and wish to invite ALL OF THE GIRLS or ALL OF THE BOYS or the WHOLE CLASS, I will hand out the invitations at school.  If you choose in invite only a few children, then I must ask you to extend your invitations by phone or mail.  Also, I cannot give out student addresses, as this is a violation of Federal Privacy Act

Bring & Brag

We have changed the name of show and tell to Bring and Brag.

Every week I will assign a Bring and Brag topic on Friday. (Example:  The first week we will share our favorite alphabet letter at Bring and Brag time.)

Bring and Brag topics will be announced in the weekly newsletter.  Some bring and brag topics will require a paper to fill out, some will require that your child bring something in, and some will require that your child do both. Please read carefully.  If there is not a Bring and Brag topic on the newsletter, there will not be Bring and Brag the next week.  Each child will be assigned a day to share.  This activity is part of your child’s report card grades.  Please help your child prepare for this activity.  I would like the children to be able to say a few sentences about their Bring and Brag. Being able to speak about each topic is part of the grade.

Mail Folders

Your child’s mail folder needs to be brought to school every day.

Everyday we will have something to put in it to bring home.  In your child’s folder is a zipper pencil case.  Please leave it in the folder.  This case is to be used for money envelopes and small notes..  The students & I will be able to locate them better and they won’t get lost this way.   If this pencil case gets lost you will need to replace it, as I had to use my own money to purchase them.  Also in the mail folder will be your child’s weekly behavior note – please check it and sign it daily.  They are responsible for coloring the bubble themselves, so some days they may forget! (Or I may forget to have them do it!) I will also have a sheet in the folder for you to fill out or write a note if you need to.

Recess

Every day your child will go out to recess.  That means your child will need to be dressed appropriately for the weather, especially in the winter!  Hats, mittens, scarves, snow pants, boots, and warm coats that are easy for your child to put on and remove independently are vital.  Be sure to label everything clearly to avoid mix-ups or losses.  Children who do not wear appropriate clothing may be confined to certain playground areas.  Children will be outside unless it is raining or in cases of extreme cold!

Discipline Policy

Kindergarten students will follow the rules listed below.

1.   Students will raise their hands to talk during classroom activities.

2.   Students will listen and follow directions.

3.   Students will be polite, considerate, and have good manners.

4.   Students will keep their hands, feet and objects to themselves.

5.   Students will walk in the school building.

If misbehavior occurs, we will follow the stoplight steps listed below.

Positive Behavior:     Green

First Misbehavior:     Yellow  (loses 5 minutes of center time or recess)

Second Misbehavior:  Blue   (loses 15 minutes of center time or recess)

Third Misbehavior:     Red    (sent to the office) (several red lights will result in a phone call home.)

New this year – A purple card will be earned for outstanding behavior!  This is hard to earn!  I will not be giving this to everyone!

On the following page is a sample of the behavior chart we will be using to keep you informed about how your child is behaving in school.  This chart will come home every day and needs to be returned to school every day because the students receive Decision dollars based upon the number of “green” days they had during the week.  They use these dollars to spend at our Kindergarten store.

Kindergarten Dollars:

I will be handing out decision dollars starting in late September early October.  Your child will earn these dollars whenever they stay on green light (bonus for purple), nice deeds, and for various other reasons.  Once a month starting in October we will shop at the Kindergarten Store!  The more dollars they earn the more things they will be able to buy!  I am always accepting donations for my store! (Check the clearance ranks)

Volunteer Program:

Please consider volunteering in the classroom.  With additional help in the classroom we are able to do special activities that we would not otherwise be able to do.  I guarantee you will have a fun and rewarding time!  As with many things a little goes a long way – you may volunteer once a month, twice a month, or weekly!  If you are unable to volunteer ask Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt, or Uncle if they would like to.  Grandparent’s sometimes make the best helpers!

Star of the Days:

Each child will be recognized as the Star of the Day! Your child will be the star for three days.  The Friday before it is your child’s turn I will send home a Star of the Day packet for you to complete at home and share at school.

Rest Time:

We will have a special rest time in our classroom from 2:00-2:20.  I will send towels home to be washed as needed.  We will have a daily rest until Christmas and then as needed after Christmas.

Transportation

When you know that your child’s transportation will change, I must have a NOTE stating what arrangements have been made.  Please mark this change on the paper in your child’s mail folder as well as include a note in the zippered pocket.

If your child is a bus rider and will change to another bus or a new stop, you must:

1. Call R.C. Smith Transportation (772-7226)

2. Send a note to the teacher.

Bus students are not allowed to change buses to go home with a friend, except in emergency situations or if you call the bus company to get approval and then send a note.  Any transportation change, even walking, should be sent to me in writing.  If your decide to pick up your child from school on any day, PLEASE SEND A NOTE ABOUT THE PICK UP OR CALL THE SCHOOL OFFICE AND INCLUDE THE NAME OF THE PERSON PICKING UP YOUR CHILD!  If I am not notified and you are not at school by dismissal time, the bus students must go home on the bus and the walkers must start walking home.

Book orders & Special Offer Notes

Every month I will send home book orders.  If you wish to order, please put your order and money in an envelope marked “Book Order”.  Do not put it with lunch money as I don’t open these envelopes right away.  Make your check out to Scholastic.  If you are purchasing books as a gift write “gift” on the envelope and I will let you know when it comes in.

Occasionally I receive special magazine offers.  When these slips come home please check yes or no, sign the slip and return to school.  The more signatures I receive the more free things our class will get.  (It doesn’t matter if you marked yes or no.  All slips count.)  Our class benefits from book orders, too.

Soup Labels/Ink Cartridges/Box Tops:

Please send in soup labels, box tops, and empty ink jet cartridges.  Our school receives money and equipment for these things.  Please place these things in a baggie and put them in your child’s mail folder.

Let’s Have a Great Year!!!
