Writing Guidelines in History

  1. Presenting your work:

  1. Use black or blue pen.

  2. Leave three lines after the previous assignment and draw a line.

  3. Put a title at the top of the assignment and underline it. Generally, you will use the title from the textbook or worksheet.

  4. Put the date at the top right of the page.

  1. Always make sure you complete the assigned reading before you attempt the questions, don’t just try to scan the text for the answer.

  2. Read the question carefully and be sure you understand what it is asking.

  3. Use full sentences to answer questions.

  4. Restate the question in your answer:

Example:

Q: What were the causes of the First World War?

A: The First World War was caused by…

Not: It was caused by…

  1. Use a proper name or noun to identify the subject of the first sentence.

  2. No opening sentences should begin with he, she, they, it, so, or because. Don't start with a pronoun or conjunction.

  3. Most answers will be made up of multiple sentences – you need to give examples that support your answer.

  4. Read your answers over to ensure they are clear and make sense.

  5. Work needs to be completed before turning in. There is a grade consequence for incomplete work.
